How to tape for a bulging disc

Do you have a bulging disc somewhere along your spine? This happens when a spinal disc pushes out of its usual position. It is not the same as a herniated disc, but it can still cause pain and discomfort. The taping method shown here can be applied alongside the affected vertebra to help reduce pain.

A bulging disc is quite common. It may occur suddenly but can also develop gradually and become a chronic issue. In such cases, taping can be a helpful addition to ease discomfort and improve stiffness.

Always make sure you know the exact diagnosis and consult a therapist if your symptoms get worse. A bulging disc can sometimes progress into a hernia.

On this page, we demonstrate how you can apply a relaxing taping method yourself. Since it concerns the back, it is best to ask someone to assist you with the application.

Self-taping for a bulging disc

Tips to ensure your taping treatment for a bulging disc is effective:

  • Is the cause of the pain or discomfort clear?
  • Read the instructions carefully before starting the taping process.
  • Choose the tape colour that suits you best.
  • Do not apply stretch at the beginning and end of the tape.
  • Rub the tape well to activate the adhesive.
  • Check whether there are any contraindications before taping.
  • On average, the tape will remain in place for three to five days.
  • You can shower while wearing the tape.
  • Removing the tape is easier with a little oil.

Advice from Christina on taping a bulging disc

For these self-taping instructions, I have selected applications that are straightforward to carry out on your own. When it comes to back taping, however, it is usually best to have someone assist you. To ensure the treatment is safe, I share practical tips to keep in mind before, during and after applying the tape. These are based on my many years of professional experience. You will already have seen a therapist for the diagnosis, but if the symptoms continue, always consult your therapist or GP again.
