How to tape a sprained finger

Curious about how to tape a sprained finger yourself? In this article, we’ll guide you through the process step by step.

When a finger is sprained or overstretched, kinesiology tape can be used to support the injured finger by gently restricting its movement. If pain, swelling, or limited mobility continues for more than two days, seek advice from a doctor or therapist.

Self-taping a sprained finger

Tips to ensure a successful finger taping treatment:

  • Is the cause of the pain or discomfort clear?
  • Always read the instructions carefully before applying the tape.
  • Choose the tape colour you prefer.
  • Avoid stretching the tape at the beginning and end.
  • Rub the tape well to activate the adhesive.
  • Check for any contraindications before taping.
  • On average, the tape will stay in place for 3–7 days.
  • It is safe to shower while wearing the tape.
  • Removing the tape is easier when using a little oil.

Preparation for taping a sprained finger

Tape

Form: 2 narrow, customised I-strips
Number of strips: 2
Technique: muscle technique (relaxing application with significant stretch)

Measuring and cutting the tape

  • Sit at a table and measure the tape strips from the fingertip down to the wrist.
  • To make the strips the right size, cut them lengthwise. The first strip should be about 1 cm wide and the second around 2.5 cm wide, depending on the width of the affected finger.

  • Place the base of the first tape strip on the fingertip (over the nail) without stretch and press it down firmly.
  • Once the base is fixed, apply the tape with a strong stretch towards the palm. Anchor the end on the palm while extending the finger.
  • Rub the tape well to secure adhesion.
  • For extra support, apply a second strip without stretch. Place the base on the back of the hand and lead the tape towards the palm. Rub it down firmly.
